My First Month in Business as a Candle Maker
Share
I have officially been in business for one month! It's so crazy to look back to when I first had the idea to start a candle business. I had the idea back in May of 2025 (almost a full year ago). I originally wanted to thrift unique vessels (mugs, teacups, crystal glasses, etc.) and make candles out of those. I thought this was a brilliant idea. I was already thrifting 1-2 times a week! Thrifting and creating (anything) are two of my biggest passions in life. I quickly started researching how to make it come to fruition. It wasn't long until I realized you can't make candles in any vessel not approved specifically for candles (duh...). That lead me down the rabbit hole of candle making in general. I never realized how much went into it.
Information in the world of candle making is never ending. There are countless types of wax, fragrance oils, wicks, vessels, etc., and changing one element changes your candle entirely. The temperature of the wax when you pour your fragrance in affects how strong your candle will be; the temperature of the room you're in will affect how evenly your candle cools. Every single detail matters. Luckily, I enjoyed every part of the research & experimentation process. I spent months learning the ins and outs of candle making. I made a lot of mistakes and adjustments as I went until I was satisfied with the end result. It was really important to me that anything I put my name on was high quality, and something that I was truly proud of.
The creative aspect is what really fueled my passion in the early stages. I loved blending fragrance oils together until I have a mixture that no one has ever made before. I loved picking out my jars, designing my labels, and coming up with names for my scents. I truly fell in love with the process and finally felt creative again after a two-year creative dry spell.
Fast forward to today, one month (and some change) since my grand opening. I can't believe I am a full-blown business owner. At times, it seemed like this day would never come. It's not easy being a perfectionist and also having no idea what you're doing when you start a new endeavor. I have received so much support, and I can't thank everyone enough. Every single person who has made a purchase or simply shared some encouraging words, thank you. I can't wait to see where this business is in a year.
